Why should you take a hypnobirthing course? Here are five reasons:

  1. It means that you are getting yourself prepared for your birth. It can enable you to change your mindset around birth, to rid yourself of any fear and anxiety around birth. It can enable you to feel positively about birth and actively look forward to your labour and birth. Much of the pain around birth stems from fear and anxiety where you become tense, your muscles tighten and this obstructs baby's journey down the uterus. You inhibit the release of Oxytocin - the hormone of love, and, instead, release Cortisol - the hormone of fear!

  2. A good hypnobirthing course will prepare you for any eventuality. Ideally, hypnobirthing prepares you for a natural, vaginal birth - a calm and confident birth at home, in a birthing centre or an MLU. However, we don’t always get ideal, do we?

Therefore, your hypnobirthing course should give you the tools and knowledge that prepares you for an induction, an intervention - even a caesarean. If it does, then you’ll be able to deal with whatever kind of birth you have and still say it was a positive birth. If you can make informed choices all the way along knowing that you’re making confident choices for you and your baby, then no matter the circumstances of the birth, it will be a positive birth.

Being informed and understanding your situation is so important. Make sure that your hypnobirthing teacher can prepare you for other eventualities than a vaginal birth! Talk to them before you book, ask questions, trust your instincts!

  3. Taking a hypnobirthing course will ensure that your birth partner is totally involved! Whoever your birth partner is - your partner, your mum, your best friend, a doula - from the very start of your hypnobirthing course they should be involved! They should be shown how best to support you, the birthing mum, during pregnancy and birth. They can be your advocate during birth, and there are many things they can do to support you throughout your labour. Your birth partner isn’t a bystander - they are an integral part of the event.

  4. You will be more aware of your choices! A good hypnobirthing course will give you the confidence to ask all the necessary questions needed so that you can make the right choices for your birth, even when things don’t go as you planned.

Being prepared with the right knowledge, information and tools to help you navigate your way through labour means that you will be calm and confident to be able have a positive birth, no matter what circumstances present. You cannot control your birth but you can be in control of the choices you make.

If you know the options that may be presented to you at your birth, you will be able to make the right decisions for you and your baby. Knowing your options is empowering!

  5. Hypnobirth babies tend to be fairly chilled and sleep better once they’re born. Why? Because they’ve been birthed in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. Parents are confident, not only about the birth choices they’ve made but in their parenting skills - even if they’re totally new to it.

You can use all your hypnobirthing resources to help with breastfeeding, to help your baby to remain calm as you navigate the life of a new parent. You can utilise deep breathing whenever you need to.

What a lovely way to meet your baby - calm, confident and relaxed. It doesn’t matter what type of birth you have or where your baby is born: hypnobirthing can really help you to have a positive birth! And, possibly, a very chilled baby?
