Baby Massage

What is baby massage?

Baby massage is when a parent or carer lovingly strokes or holds their baby and is ideal for babies from birth to pre-crawling.

Using a high quality, non-fragranced vegetable oil, soothing holds and rhythmic strokes are given on each area of baby's body, following a sequence which has been developed over many years. The massage offers a wonderful experience and a special time to communicate both verbally and non-verbally with babies, so that they feel loved, valued and respected.

Four of the main areas of benefit include:

  • Interaction and bonding

  • Relaxation

  • Relief

  • Stimulation

In his book, Loving Hands: the Traditional Art of Baby Massage, French obstretician, Frederick Leboyer, wrote: “It is through loving, caressing, tactile stimulation and communication that the infant learns that he/she is loved. We must speak to their skins. We must speak to their backs, which thirst and cry as much as their bellies".

In India and Africa, baby massage has been a longstanding parenting tradition and was introduced to the western world during the last 30 years, gaining in popularity in the UK since the late 1990s.

I follow the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) programme, the most comprehensive and highest standard of classes currently available in the UK.

As a Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI), my baby massage classes offer a wonderful opportunity to experience how to communicate with your baby through nurturing touch and massage strokes. You will be shown how to adapt the strokes for your baby's individual needs and your growing child. The emphasis and focus is on sensitive and enjoyable interaction between the parent/carer and the baby, so that you gain a deeper understanding of your baby’s behaviour, unique language and cues.

About the classes

Classes are available in both a group environment or on a one-to-one basis. They are ideally taught over five weeks (groups) or four weeks (private) in order to give both the parent and baby time to learn and become accustomed to the massage. The group sessions include time for informal discussion on the joys and challenges of parenting.

Baby massage classes are suitable for all parents and all babies from birth to pre-crawling. Only parents/carers will massage the baby whilst I demonstrate the strokes on a doll. Detailed massage stroke handouts will be available and you will be given a bottle of fractionated coconut oil to take with you to use at home.

IAIM classes are baby led, so please don’t be concerned if your baby cries, needs feeding or falls asleep. Respond to your baby promptly and sensitively as this is acknowledged to be a way of supporting the bonding process. All strokes are repeatedly demonstrated each week as we build up to the full massage.

As a Certified Infant Massage Instructor, (CIMI), I can work with babies from birth and with babies with additional needs. Please contact me directly if you would like to talk this through further.

Classes currently run throughout the week at various times to suit your baby’s schedule over five weeks. There are a maximum of eight parents and babies in each large group class and three parents and babies in the small group class.
